VerseOne Group: Connecting NHS and Social Housing Systems to Deliver Better Public Services

Innovators of the Year 2026

What happens when the systems meant to serve people become so disjointed and complex that accessing essential services feels like a challenge in itself?

Across healthcare and social housing, organisations are under constant pressure to deliver faster, more accessible, and more personalised services. However, many continue to struggle with disconnected systems, fragmented data, and administrative processes that consume valuable time and resources. These digital barriers result in frustration for staff and a poorer service for end users.

For more than 20 years, VerseOne Group has been helping organisations in its chosen sectors to solve this challenge. Founded in 2004 by Alan Neilson, Founder and Executive Chairman, the company was built on a simple but powerful belief: technology should make public services easier to access, easier to manage, and more effective for the communities they serve.

That vision has guided VerseOne through two decades of technological change. While digital tools have evolved, the company’s purpose has remained remarkably consistent: to improve the lives of people who work in, and rely on, its chosen sectors of healthcare and social housing. Its solutions are built on its powerful VerseOne DXP, a unified software platform designed to connect enterprise systems, customer information and staff data into a unified digital experience that removes complexity rather than add to it.

Today, VerseOne is a trusted technology partner for the NHS and Social Housing organisations seeking to modernise service delivery. Supporting more than 120 NHS and Social Housing organisations and helping over 25.4 million users access information, services, and support, VerseOne enables organisations to improve accessibility, streamline operations and empower employees with the tools they need to work more efficiently. By breaking down information silos and creating seamless digital ecosystems, the company helps create more connected and engaging digital experiences for staff, patients, residents, and service users.

What sets VerseOne apart is its focus on outcomes, every innovation is developed to improve the daily experience for staff, patients, residents and communities.

Driven by Technology with Purpose

With over 35 years of experience in the software and technology industry, Alan has always been motivated by the opportunity to use technology to solve real operational challenges. Throughout a career spanning more than three decades, he has built and grown software businesses that have helped organisations improve performance, efficiency, and service delivery.

While his professional background is rooted in technology, his commitment to the NHS and Social Housing sectors is also deeply personal. Having experienced social housing during his childhood and teenage years, and with close family members who worked within the NHS, he witnessed first-hand the important role these sectors play in supporting individuals, families, and communities. Those experiences shaped his belief that technology can be a powerful leveller, helping people access the services they need.

Following a number of successful ventures, Alan wanted to apply his experience to sectors that directly impact people’s lives. Today, both the NHS and Social Housing sectors face increasing pressures, rising demand, and growing expectations for digital self-service. VerseOne was founded to help these organisations create connected digital experiences that improve access to information, strengthen engagement, and ultimately deliver better outcomes for staff, patients, and residents.

Solving the Challenge of Fragmented Systems

Alan believes the greatest challenge facing many organisations is fragmentation. Over time, systems are introduced to solve individual operational needs, often creating disconnected data sources and inconsistent user experiences.

Replacing these systems is rarely practical or cost-effective. Instead, VerseOne focuses on connecting existing investments through API integration across all systems, creating a unified digital environment without requiring large-scale replacement programmes. This approach enables staff, patients, and residents to access information through a single, connected experience, while organisations continue to benefit from the systems they already trust and rely on.

Improving Outcomes Through Personalised Digital Experiences

A strong example of this approach can be seen in VerseOne’s work with Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust and its award-winning Parent Portal, built on VerseOne DXP. The platform was designed to provide expectant parents with personalised, accessible, and evidence-based information throughout their maternity journey while reducing pressure on frontline teams.

The portal delivers tailored content based on an individual’s stage of pregnancy, integrates digital education and antenatal services, and provides access to trusted information in 133 languages. By bringing these services together within a single digital experience, the Trust has improved accessibility, strengthened patient engagement, reduced reliance on less reliable sources of information, significantly reduced complaints, and increased revenue from class bookings.

The solution also received the HSJ Partnership Award for Patient Engagement and Experience, with the Trust highlighting strong uptake among parents and the positive impact the platform had in helping families access trusted information more easily throughout pregnancy and postnatal care.

Building for Scale, Security, and Reliability

Scalability, resilience and security have been fundamental design principles for VerseOne DXP from the very beginning. The platform was developed to support growth without compromising performance, enabling organisations to deliver reliable digital services at significant scale.

These organisations operate in a sector where fragmented, disconnected systems are the norm — the very challenge VerseOne exists to solve.

Today, those principles are proven every day. VerseOne supports hundreds of millions of monthly interactions through a high-availability Cloud infrastructure that is continuously monitored and optimised to deliver secure, resilient and reliable digital services.

Security is embedded throughout the platform, development lifecycle and operational processes, reflecting the needs of highly regulated sectors where trust, resilience and data protection are essential.

This commitment is demonstrated by achieving ISO 27001 certification at the first assessment and maintaining it for almost a decade as standards have evolved, giving customers confidence that security, governance and compliance are built into every VerseOne solution

The result is a platform that enables organisations to innovate confidently while maintaining the highest standards of reliability, security, and operational performance.

Balancing Flexibility with Long-Term Sustainability

VerseOne believes organisations should never have to choose between flexibility and sustainability. VerseOne DXP has been designed to support a wide range of organisational requirements through configuration rather than custom development wherever possible.

This approach enables customers to create digital experiences that reflect their own processes, branding, and user needs while benefiting from a continually evolving platform.

By maintaining a common core architecture, VerseOne can continue to innovate rapidly, minimise complexity, and provide customers with greater long-term value, predictability, and return on investment.

Creating Freedom Through Open Standards

One of VerseOne’s core principles is ensuring customers retain freedom of choice. Alan recognises that public sector organisations often operate complex technology environments and require solutions that can adapt alongside changing business requirements.

By embracing open standards and interoperability, VerseOne enables organisations to connect existing systems, protect previous investments, and orchestrate data across the company. This flexibility allows customers to modernise at their own pace while maintaining a single source of truth.

Connecting Data While Protecting Privacy

For many NHS and Social Housing organisations, one of the biggest barriers to delivering a seamless digital experience is the challenge of connecting information across multiple systems. Staff, patients, and residents often need to access services that rely on data held in different locations, creating complexity and inefficiency.

VerseOne’s integration platform is designed to securely bring these systems together while maintaining organisational control over data. Rather than creating unnecessary duplication, the platform enables information to flow between systems in a controlled and governed way, ensuring users have access to the information they need while protecting privacy and maintaining compliance.

The result is a more connected experience for end users, improved operational efficiency for organisations, and greater confidence that sensitive information remains secure.

Making AI Practical, Safe, and Responsible

Alan views artificial intelligence as a tool for augmentation rather than replacement. Its purpose is to help staff work more efficiently, and quickly access information while reducing administrative burden and ensuring that people remain at the centre of decision-making.

VerseOne’s AI strategy is built around three principles: Safe, Pragmatic, and Augmentative. AI must operate within appropriate governance frameworks, deliver measurable value, and support professional judgement rather than replace it. This SPA-based approach underpins VerseOne DXP's AI capabilities and is central to what DXPv6 now builds on, creating a secure, AI-native foundation for the platform.

This approach is particularly important within healthcare and housing, where trust, transparency, and accountability are critical. By focusing on practical use cases that improve productivity, accessibility, and knowledge sharing, VerseOne helps organisations embrace AI responsibly while maintaining control over their data and decision-making processes.

Empowering Frontline Staff Through Automation

A strong example of automation in action is VerseOne’s work with University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, where the company helped deliver a unified Staff Hub supporting more than 20,000 employees across multiple hospital sites and satellite locations.

By bringing together communications, operational information, workplace resources, and Microsoft 365 services into a single digital experience, staff were able to access the information they needed more quickly and efficiently. This reduced complexity, improved access to critical information, and created a more connected employee experience across the organisation.

The platform also supported wider staff engagement initiatives, helping strengthen communication, recognition, and collaboration while allowing frontline teams to spend less time searching for information and more time focused on delivering care.

Putting People at the Heart of Transformation

Alan believes successful digital transformation is about people as much as technology. One of the most common reasons projects fail to achieve their full potential is limited engagement with the individuals who will ultimately use the solution.

VerseOne places user engagement at the centre of every implementation programme. Through discovery workshops, stakeholder engagement, and collaborative design processes, the company works closely with leadership teams, frontline staff, service users, and residents to understand their priorities and requirements. This approach helps ensure solutions are designed around real-world needs, improving adoption, strengthening engagement, and creating digital experiences that deliver lasting value for both organisations and their users.

Delivering Predictability While Driving Innovation

Public sector organisations face increasing pressure to deliver more with limited budgets, making cost predictability a critical factor in any digital transformation programme.

VerseOne’s managed cloud approach is designed to provide organisations with confidence that their digital services can scale and evolve without unexpected costs or complexity. Through ongoing optimisation, proactive monitoring, and continuous platform improvement, VerseOne ensures customers receive maximum value from their investment while maintaining high levels of performance, resilience, and security.

At the same time, the company continues to invest in innovation, new capabilities, and platform enhancements while helping customers maintain clear visibility and control over long-term operational costs. This enables organisations to focus on delivering better services rather than managing technology infrastructure.

Preparing for the Future of Public Services

Across both the NHS and Social Housing sectors, Alan sees growing pressure to deliver more connected, accessible, and user-friendly digital services that align with the expectations people now have in their everyday lives. Society has become increasingly digital, with people expecting to find information, access services and complete interactions through convenient self-service channels whenever they need them.

Within healthcare, the NHS 10-Year Plan places significant emphasis on improving digital access, mobile experiences, inclusion, and more connected patient and staff journeys through technology. As demand continues to rise, NHS organisations need connected digital environments that can work alongside existing systems, helping improve access to services and information without requiring large-scale replacement programmes.

Within Social Housing, evolving regulations and legislation, including Awaab’s Law, are increasing the focus on communication, responsiveness, and resident engagement. Housing providers are also under pressure to reduce administrative burden on staff and deliver digital experiences that help residents feel informed, supported, and connected to services.

VerseOne DXP v6 is the latest chapter in two decades of proven platform evolution. Alan believes the sector is moving away from an “it will do” culture, towards delivering the high-quality digital experiences people expect in every aspect of their lives. DXP v6 has been designed to help organisations meet their rising expectations without an IT refresh. Every capability is built around delivering better outcomes for staff, residents and patients through a connected, accessible and intelligent digital service.

Independent analysis suggests that limitations in NHS IT systems cost the service more than 13.5 million clinical hours a year, close to £1 billion in lost operational capacity annually. Rather than replacing the current enterprise systems organisations already rely on, VerseOne can connect them, creating a single environment for all information, services and workflows.

When staff are freed from navigating disconnected systems, they are better informed, better equipped, and not weighed down by administrative burden. That shift doesn't stop there: staff who feel supported and less stretched who are able to give patients and tenants more of their time, attention and care. This is the virtuous cycle at the centre of VerseOne's mission — happier, more empowered staff delivering better, more responsive services, and in turn, communities who feel genuinely supported by the public services they rely on.

Advice for Leaders Embracing Digital Transformation

One of the most important lessons Alan has learned throughout his career is that successful digital transformation is rarely about technology alone. The strongest programmes begin with a clear understanding of the outcomes an organisation wants to achieve and the people it aims to support.

He encourages leaders to focus on creating a long-term vision that brings together operational teams, frontline staff, service users, and technology partners from the outset. Organisations should also place security, governance, and accessibility at the heart of every decision, particularly when managing sensitive data and critical public services.

Alan also emphasises the importance of choosing partners carefully. The right technology partner does more than deliver software. It helps create a sustainable digital foundation that can evolve alongside future organisational needs. Accreditations such as ISO 27001 provide additional assurance that security, compliance, and best practices remain embedded throughout that journey.
