NFL Free Agency Frenzy: Big Moves Shake Up 2025 Offseason

NFL Free Agency Frenzy: Big Moves Shake Up 2025 Offseason

Blockbuster Trades and Surprise Releases Mark the Start of Free Agency

The 2025 NFL offseason is off to a roaring start as the league’s free agency period kicks off with a flurry of major trades and unexpected roster cuts. With the legal tampering window opening on Monday at noon ET, teams wasted no time in making aggressive moves to reshape their rosters. Even before the official start of free agency on March 12, star players like Deebo Samuel and DK Metcalf have already been dealt in blockbuster trades, sending shockwaves through the league.

Monday marked the beginning of the negotiation period, allowing all 32 teams to engage in discussions with impending free agents. However, official signings and trades can only be finalized starting Wednesday, March 12. Players who were released prior to this window, on the other hand, are free to sign with new teams immediately since their contracts were officially terminated ahead of free agency.

As franchises scramble to make key acquisitions, fans eagerly track the movements of the league’s biggest names. Who is headed where? Who remains up for grabs? And how much are this year’s top talents commanding on the open market?

Major Signings and Shocking Releases

CBS Sports has been closely following the action with a running tracker of the top 100 free agents, compiled by NFL senior writer Pete Prisco. Some of the league’s biggest stars have already secured new contracts, while others face uncertain futures. Here’s a look at some of the most significant moves so far:

  • Davante Adams, WR | Los Angeles Rams
The former Jets wide receiver has signed a lucrative two-year, $46 million deal with the Rams after being released by New York. Los Angeles is clearly investing in offensive firepower, pairing Adams with their existing weapons to bolster their passing attack.

  • Joey Bosa, DE | Free Agent
The Chargers made a stunning move by releasing Pro Bowl defensive end Joey Bosa on March 5, making him one of the top pass rushers available in free agency. A number of contenders are expected to pursue the star defender.

  • Aaron Rodgers, QB | Free Agent
In a shocking turn of events, the New York Jets have released veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, setting the stage for a new chapter in his career. The former MVP will officially hit free agency on March 12, sparking speculation about potential landing spots.

  • Tyler Lockett, WR | Free Agent
The Seahawks parted ways with longtime wideout Tyler Lockett on March 5, signaling a shift in their offensive strategy. The reliable veteran is expected to draw interest from multiple teams looking for an experienced pass-catcher.

  • Jonathan Allen, DT | Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings made a major splash by signing defensive tackle Jonathan Allen to a three-year, $60 million contract after his release from Washington. Allen’s presence will significantly bolster Minnesota’s defensive front.

  • Harold Landry III, LB | New England Patriots
After being let go by the Titans, Landry quickly found a new home with the Patriots, agreeing to a three-year, $43.5 million New England’s defense gains a versatile playmaker to anchor their linebacking corps.

What’s Next?

As the free agency period officially begins on March 12, expect even more headline-making moves in the days ahead. Several big names remain on the open market, and teams are expected to continue reshuffling their rosters in pursuit of championship aspirations. With top-tier talent still available, the NFL’s offseason drama is just getting started. Stay tuned as the 2025 free agency frenzy unfolds!
