Doctors Could Soon Perform 6 Prostate Procedures a Day, Profound Medical’s New MRI Technology May Change Everything

New Software Expands TULSA-PRO Capabilities
Profound Medical has come up with new software for its Treatment Delivery Console (TDC) to increase the efficiency and user-friendliness of its TULSA-PRO platform that employs MRI for non-invasive treatment of prostate tissue ablation without any cut. Profound Medical will roll out this software on its existing fleet of TULSA-PRO systems.
The upgrade comes after previous software modules of TULSA-AI were developed to increase efficiency, treatment planning, and physician experience. The current software comes with two major enhancements; one is the ability to control interventional MRI in real time and the other is physician-requested changes to user interface and hardware control.
Greater Physician Control During Treatment
These newly added real-time MRI controls are designed to allow surgeons more control over the TULSA-PRO robot that functions under supervision of the doctor. The main difference between TULSA-PRO robot and other master-slave robots is that TULSA-PRO robot performs certain tasks and even uses artificial intelligence to perform such tasks without any involvement of the hands of the doctor.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of ProFound Medical Corporation and Chairman of the Board Arun Menawat, some doctors are now able to perform up to four TULSA procedures during one day. In future, the company wants to make it easy for physicians to perform up to six procedures daily.
Personalized Prostate Treatment
According to Profound, the software can also enhance the capability of the physicians in providing consistent and customized prostate ablation. The TULSA-PRO technology allows the doctors to visualize, ablate, and verify the procedure on the prostate through MRI imaging.
The technology is capable of offering various techniques of treatments that include whole-gland, subtotal, hemi, multifocal, and focal treatment. The aim of this is to assist the physicians in customizing the treatment according to the individual anatomy and diseases while minimizing the risks associated with surgery and radiation such as urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction.
Broader Medical Applications
In addition to the MRI-guided treatment platform, Profound Medical commercializes Sonalleve. The conditions that are treated using Sonalleve include bone metastases, desmoid tumors, osteoid osteoma, uterine fibroids, and adenomyosis. This system gives patients targeted treatment without any incisions and is related to no blood loss during the procedure, no overnight hospitalization, and rapid recovery. Also, the company researches other applications, such as abdominal cancer treatment and hyperthermia cancer treatment.
TULSA-PRO has been cleared by the FDA in the United States and is approved or cleared in such countries as Europe, Canada, Saudi Arabia, India, Australia, New Zealand, and the UAE. According to Profound, its latest software update might assist in the development of the next level of MRI-guided prostate treatment, including remotely done procedures without incisions.
