SpaceX Stock Plunged 13%, So Why Are Retail Investors Buying More?

Individual Investors Buy the Dip
Despite the significant drop in SpaceX's stock price after the company released its first earnings statement since going public, the retail investors still showed faith in the company. In fact, many retail investors saw this decline in the share price as an opportunity for purchase.
As per Vanda Research, the retail traders bought a net amount of $22.7 million of SpaceX shares in the first hour of trading after the earnings statement was released. This was the third-biggest figure for the first hour of buying after the IPO of SpaceX in June 2026.
Earnings Trigger Sharp Sell-Off
The SpaceX stock price plunged almost 13% following the company’s earnings announcement. The market was worried about the over $18 billion spent on capital in the second quarter, way above analysts’ expectations. Most of the spending is going towards building AI infrastructure and data centers. Some institutional investors wondered whether the profitable Starlink unit would be able to continue providing sufficient cash flow to fund such projects.
Regardless of these worries, the trading volume was exceptionally high, with over $10 billion worth of SpaceX stock trading hands during the session. The stock ended up becoming the most bought stock among US retail investors, beating the semiconductor maker AMD.
Focus Turns to Share Unlock
Investors are also getting ready for an immense surge in the float of SpaceX stock. As many as 911 million restricted shares will become tradable. This will nearly double the float of the company. Further share unlocks are also expected later this year, making this one of the biggest post-IPO share unlocks in US history.
According to some market analysts, the increased float could further weigh on the stock in the short term. However, other experts are saying that all these risks have already been priced into the current drop, providing a buying opportunity for investors.
Long-Term Confidence Remains
Despite the issues of high expenditure and potential share dilution in the future being raised by Wall Street, retail investors are still paying attention to the growth prospects of SpaceX. Some think that the company’s investments in areas such as artificial intelligence, satellite services, and futuristic technology can help it grow in the long run.
