Colt and Partners Complete Successful Multi-Core Fibre Trial on London Metro Network

Introduction
Colt Technology Services has completed its first live test of Multi-Core Fibre (MCF) technology which shows potential for future optical transport networks in the London metro system. This test which Colt performed with its major partners marks the company as one of the first organizations in the world to evaluate this next-generation fiber technology under actual field conditions.
What Is Multi-Core Fibre?
Multi-Core Fibre is a next-generation technology that enables multiple data streams to transmit through multiple optical fibre cores. MCF enables higher bandwidth transmission through a single cable system which exceeds the capacity of traditional single-mode fibre that transmits one light path. The system works effectively because it meets the demands of urban environments where space and budget restrictions create difficulties for installing new cabling systems.
The Trial Details
The trial was conducted with optical and networking partners Sterlite Technologies Limited (STL), Ciena, and Nokia. The testing occurred throughout Colt's metro network which connected two Points of Presence (PoPs) that were situated 9 kilometers and 63 kilometers apart.
- The main findings showed that the system operated at a line rate of 800 Gbps.
- The validation process confirmed the ability to deliver 100GE and 400GE services.
- The evaluation involved complete tests which assessed dispersion, crosstalk, throughput, fault behavior, and optical loss.
The performance assessments succeeded in meeting operational standards which enabled the technology to be used for upcoming high-speed network deployments.

Colt has not yet established a commercial launch date for Multi-Core Fibre although this trial result demonstrates a significant advancement toward wider network expansion in areas with highest growth demands.
