Alex Murdaugh Retrial: Why His Lawyers Want a Move to Richland County

Defense Requests Move to Columbia
The legal team of Alex Murdaugh will now focus on Richland County as a likely venue for the double murder retrial that is scheduled to take place in April 2027.
Murdaugh's lawyers have officially filed an application asking for the transfer of the trial to take place in Richland County in Columbia, South Carolina. This follows a decision by Judge Debra McCaslin, who has already decided that the trial has to move out of Colleton County and the 14th Judicial Circuit. She has yet to make an official decision on which county the trial will eventually be transferred to.
Charleston County was considered as one of the potential venues. Now Richland County is recommended since there might be enough jurors in Columbia, and the trial expenses would be lower.
Why the Defense Prefers Richland County
They argued that Richland County had the same jury pool as Charleston County. This means that it would have provided the judge with a chance to find jurors who can view the case objectively.
The defense cited the similarity in the demographic makeup of Richland County with that of Colleton County.
Then there was the matter of cost. The responsibility for covering the cost of the new trial fell on Colleton County, and the defense believed that relocating to Richland County might prevent wasteful and unnecessary costs.
The defense also rebutted the argument put forward by the state concerning the interference by the Masters golf tournament during the first week of the proceedings. The reason is that most of the time in the first week would be devoted to finding the jury.
Background to the Venue Dispute
Murdaugh is known to be guilty in the death of his wife, Maggie Murdaugh, and son, Paul, back in 2021. These murders earned him life sentences in prison in 2023.
The South Carolina Supreme Court decided to throw out these sentences in May 2026 because of significant jury tampering that was discovered through Becky Hill, the elected Colleton County clerk of court.
Venue is an important matter here since the previous trial got a lot of attention due to the defendant's long-term relationship in the area.
State Raises Concerns About Charleston
Before looking at Richland County, however, Murdaugh's lawyers had sought the retrial to be held in Charleston County.
This suggestion was rejected by the prosecutors. The state mentioned the traffic downtown, lack of parking facilities, the likelihood of flooding, and the sheer number of individuals expected to attend the trial.
In addition to these factors, the state mentioned that Charleston County was contiguous to Colleton County and part of the same media market.
Final Location Still Pending
It has already been decided by Judge McCaslin that the case will be transferred out of Colleton County, but there is still no decision about the new venue.
The defense has now proposed Richland County as their choice. The lawyers have said that Columbia can provide a practical venue with a jury pool that is big enough while reducing the financial cost for Colleton County.
The trial of Murdaugh is still set to take place in April 2027. The venue selection is supposed to play an important role in the pretrial proceedings. It has also been reported recently that the pretrial proceeding is going on in other aspects of the case.
