Empowering Student Entrepreneurs: Northern Kentucky University's INKUBATOR Program

Empowering Student Entrepreneurs: Northern Kentucky University's INKUBATOR Program

Northern Kentucky University (NKU) stands as a fertile ground for budding entrepreneurs, hosting a diverse array of student-led ventures through its renowned INKUBATOR program. Founded in 2012, the INKUBATOR serves as a 12-week business accelerator, welcoming students and alumni alike to explore and develop their entrepreneurial ambitions. Under the guidance of experienced mentors and industry leaders, participants receive invaluable support, resources, and potential funding to transform their ideas into thriving businesses.

Zac Strobl, the program's director, proudly notes NKU's pioneering role as one of the country's first university accelerators. Tailored for individuals committed to launching or scaling their ventures, the program offers a dynamic platform for innovation and growth.

Since its inception, the INKUBATOR has nurtured 76 teams, resulting in the establishment of 41 successful businesses. Impressively, 67% of these ventures have sustained operations beyond two years, a testament to the program's efficacy in fostering sustainable entrepreneurship.

In recognition of its outstanding contributions, NKU's INKUBATOR program recently emerged as a finalist for the prestigious Model University Accelerator/Incubator award, an accolade bestowed by the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship.

The Northerner had the opportunity to sit down with several participants of the INKUBATOR, each sharing their unique journey and entrepreneurial insights.

Isaiah Kelley, a visionary entrepreneur and founder of Smoove Creations, embarked on his entrepreneurial odyssey in 2016 from the confines of his NKU dorm room. Initially inspired by his passion for sneakers, Kelley's meticulous craftsmanship garnered attention, propelling him to collaborate with renowned brands such as the Cincinnati Bengals and Proctor and Gamble. His transformative journey, from humble beginnings to national recognition, epitomizes the spirit of innovation nurtured by the INKUBATOR program.

Reese Watson, another enterprising student, harnessed her experiences as a babysitter to conceive Sitter Link—an innovative platform revolutionizing the childcare industry. Rooted in the belief that connections foster trust, Watson's vision seeks to bridge the gap between parents and caregivers through mutual acquaintances. Her participation in the INKUBATOR catalyzed the development of Sitter Link, offering a beacon of hope for parents seeking reliable childcare solutions.

Andre Gonzalez, the creative force behind Sonder Media, found his calling in the art of storytelling, specializing in crafting cinematic wedding films. Armed with a passion for videography and a keen eye for detail, Gonzalez's venture aims to immortalize cherished memories through captivating visual narratives. His journey from novice videographer to esteemed filmmaker epitomizes the transformative impact of the INKUBATOR in nurturing aspiring entrepreneurs.

LeAnn McAbee, fueled by a desire to empower women in fitness, conceived Girly Pumps—a visionary endeavor aimed at creating inclusive gym spaces free from judgment and harassment. McAbee's unwavering commitment to promoting a safe and supportive fitness environment underscores the ethos of resilience and empowerment instilled by the INKUBATOR program.

As these remarkable stories attest, NKU's INKUBATOR program serves as a beacon of innovation, empowering students to turn their entrepreneurial dreams into reality. With a steadfast commitment to fostering creativity, collaboration, and resilience, the program continues to shape the future of entrepreneurship, one venture at a time.
