Unequal Access to AI Opportunities

An increasing gap in the use of AI skills in Europe and Central Asia is leading to different opportunities among people in the region, says a World Bank report. As AI technologies are developing very quickly, all the people are not equally reaping the benefits.

The study states that people having good digital skills, proper education, and more technological access will reap the benefits of AI-driven opportunities. Those who lack the above-mentioned resources can be left behind.

Who Benefits Most From AI?

Individuals having high-level digital skills and expertise are generally in a position to gain maximum from AI. Through such tools, they can achieve efficiency, improved decision making, and become more valuable in the workplace.

However, individuals with low-level digital skills and limited education are likely to be left behind because they do not have the capacity to utilize the technology effectively.

Challenges Across the Region

According to the World Bank, there is a need for building the foundations in place in order to create a workforce that is ready for AI. These include training teachers, improving digital skills, improving technology infrastructure and creating policies conducive to the adoption of AI.

Various projects being initiated in the region are assisting schools and institutions in improving their digital learning capabilities and preparing the citizens for technology jobs. Some of the projects are even being extended to other countries.

The Risk of a Wider Digital Gap

However, the experts caution that the unequal use of artificial intelligence may increase inequality. The nations and employees who become adept at artificial intelligence will benefit more in terms of productivity growth than those who won’t be able to catch up.

Furthermore, there is also apprehension that automation would affect entry-level positions and make it difficult for employees to acquire experience.

Building an Inclusive AI Future

In line with the World Bank, investments need to be made in certain areas like education, digital literacy, infrastructure, and workforce development in order for AI to positively affect more people. Improving on these areas would mean that nations have the capability to reduce inequality and prepare their citizens for future developments.

Given the significance of AI in ensuring economic growth, it is only right that the problem of skills gap should be addressed.
