Pro-Russia and Iran-Linked Hackers United in Cyber-Space against Middle East Opponent

Rising Cyber Alliance
Researchers say that more pro-Russia cyber actors have joined forces with Iranian hackers since the United States and Israel conducted military operations against Iran. An informal alliance that assumes the title #OpIsrael commits itself to inflicting damage on an enemy through cyber attacks.
Targets and Tactics
The cyber campaign includes a range of disruptive activities:
- Denial-of-service (DoS; ddos, by extension) attacks are a way of flooding networks so they become non-operational.
- Data exfiltration and leaks
- SQL injection hacks to extract sensitive information
These actions have hit an Israeli defence contractor, multiple municipal governments, and institutions worldwide, including in France, Vietnam, and India.
The Cyber Islamic Resistance group functions as a main force in the ongoing battle which they fight together with the pro-Russian NoName057(16) organization to carry out their attacks. One security breach resulted in the release of CCTV footage which hackers used to show their unauthorized access to protected systems according to analysts.
Reach and Scope
Cybersecurity firm Palo Alto Networks' Unit-42 estimates that 60 different threat groups which include Iranian and Russian affiliated networks are currently conducting their current attack operations. The groups maintain alleged ties to nationalistic state ideologies although their members operate independent from government control.
The Iran-related group Handala Hack announced its successful penetration of energy company systems and multiple gas stations throughout Jordan.
State Actors: Limited But Not Zero
Experts note that true state-sponsored Iranian cyber operations remain restricted to specific geographic areas. The Iranian government faces difficulties in executing sophisticated cyber operations because its current internet capacity operates at diminished levels. The campaign receives support from people who do not belong to the government but operate as loosely connected supporters of the movement.
U.S. Preparedness and Response
U.S. authorities are monitoring the situation closely. Federal officials warn that critical infrastructure systems remain at increased danger because state actors do not need to be their main threat for smaller organizations with weaker security systems.
