California Burrito: How Bert Mueller Built a $23M Indian-Based Mexican Restaurant Chain with Vision and Grit

Jim Cramer, the famous author of How to Make Money in Any Market and host of Mad Money on CNBC, has a knack for recognizing a potentially good business. After years reviewing balance sheets and earnings announcements, he understands exactly what qualities can help a business get noticed. One business that has piqued Cramer's interest is California Burrito, a Mexican restaurant chain started by Bert Mueller, a 36-year old American entrepreneur based in India. California Burrito has yet to issue public shares, but Cramer believes the story is compelling.
In 2024, California Burrito reported some $23 million in sales while running operations at about 103 locations. According to Cramer, what impresses him the most about Mueller's initial story is an indefatigable belief in himself, which Cramer considers a crucial factor required to be a successful entrepreneur. "Belief in yourself pushes you to not give up..... Without it, small businesses have a hard time staying open," says Cramer.
Thinking Past the Numbers
Mueller first predicted that opening his first restaurant meant approximately $100,000. He opted, instead, to gather $250,000 from friends and family, with the idea this would provide a more robust platform. "A lot of entrepreneurs try to take the budget too far," Cramer said. "It often results in failures. Extra funds can given a little breathing room to let it grow."
By securing additional capital, Mueller gives a slightly greater chance for his business to succeed through some of the challenges that would be inevitable in the beginning. This careful, mindful thinking is something Cramer admires as part of sustainable entrepreneurship.
Imagining the Future
Mueller's aspirations greatly stretch beyond the current reach. By 2030, he ideally wants to grow California Burrito to have 300 locations, and to eventually have the company listed as a public offering. However, he still envisions himself focused on offering a true dining experience. He will continue to work hard to source locally and use products attributed with true Mexican and Californian attributes so that there is consistency in the food and uncompromised quality.
Cramer applauds this commitment to authenticity. "Real success comes from hard work, being culturally sensitive, and giving a customer real experience." he explained. "The customer sees authenticity and it is the spine of a brand."
Lessons in Entrepreneurship
California Burrito provides a wealth of knowledge for budding entrepreneurs. Mueller's journey stands out as the product of self-confidence, thoughtful financial planning, independence, dedication to quality, and vision for the future. Cramer's observation is an important reminder that even the most successful entrepreneurs all intended it to be that way; no one ever got to where they are by accident - only through planning, perseverance, and passion.
