Record Interest Forces Temporary Pause

AI company Moonshot AI, which is based in Beijing, has suspended its subscription service for its new AI model Kimi K3 because there is now an excess demand for its computing resources. This comes just days after the launch of the new AI model, reflecting increasing global interest in Chinese-made AI models.

Kimi K3 Gains Attention Worldwide

The K3 Kimi model has been widely discussed due to its impressive capabilities when performing various cognitive activities, such as coding, reasoning, and problem solving. According to Moonshot AI, the company claims that the number of parameters in the model is 2.8 trillion, which makes it the biggest open-weight AI in the world.

Infrastructure Struggles to Keep Up

According to Moonshot AI, high user demands during the first 48 hours following the launch brought the company’s GPUs almost to the limit. In order to ensure the quality of services for current clients, Moonshot AI has decided to halt further sales of its paid services until more computational power becomes available.

Current customers will have uninterrupted access to the services, whereas new clients will be gradually let in as new computational capabilities are provided by Moonshot AI. Moonshot AI has even considered introducing separate paid subscription plans for general AI and coding purposes.

Chinese AI Competition Continues to Grow

Kimi K3 shows how fast the development of China’s artificial intelligence sector has been happening. Several AI models have been released by Chinese companies that can rival the best models developed in America, but at a much more affordable cost. But increased demand has shown that there are still infrastructure limitations, especially for Chinese companies that cannot access high-end AI chips.

IPO Plans Move Ahead

Founded in 2023 by research scientist Yang Zhilin, Moonshot AI has managed to attract over $5.5 billion in capital from venture capitalists and is planning for an IPO in Hong Kong. At the same time, the firm continues to raise more funds to facilitate further growth due to rising demand for its AI solutions.

With all that being said, the sudden subscription freeze has not affected the impressive adoption rates of Kimi K3 and allowed Moonshot AI to become one of the most rapidly growing AI companies in China.
