Cynthia Erivo Makes Golden Globes History with Second Lead Actress Nomination
Media & Entertainment

A Landmark Moment for Representation
Cynthia Erivo has made history at the Golden Globe Awards, becoming the first Black woman ever to receive two nominations in the Lead Actress, Comedy or Musical category.
That milestone adds a significant chapter to Golden Globes history. Since the awards began, more than 80 years ago, only 12 Black women have ever been nominated in that lead actress category. Until now, none had managed more than one nomination.
The Role That Earned the Nomination
This second nomination comes for Erivo’s role as Elphaba in Wicked: For Good, the latest entry in the film adaptation of the popular Broadway musical. The role had already earned her acclaim in the previous film.
Her portrayal of Elphaba is central to the film’s tone and storytelling, and industry observers say her performance demonstrates both emotional depth and star power, a combination that could make this second nomination more meaningful than just symbolic.
Erivo’s Reaction
Shortly after the nominations were revealed, Erivo shared her joy publicly on social media. She described the news as “lovely,” called the nomination “an honor,” and thanked the creative team behind the film including director Jon M. Chu and producer Marc Platt, for making the journey possible. She added that playing Elphaba “has been a beautiful journey,” and called the nomination “the cherry on top.”
She also congratulated her co-star Ariana Grande, who was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for the same film, marking a rare occurrence of two actors from the same movie being nominated in major acting categories.
What This Means for the Industry
This recognition underscores long-overdue progress toward representation in major Hollywood awards. With only one Black woman having ever won the Golden Globe for lead actress in a comedy or musical (Angela Bassett in 1994), and very few even nominated, Erivo’s second nod is groundbreaking.
Beyond the statistics, it sends a message about broadening recognition of Black talent, especially within genres (comedy, musicals) where such representation has historically been weaker.
What’s Next
Award season is underway. “Wicked: For Good” has collected multiple Golden Globe nominations. Observers and fans alike will be watching whether Erivo’s second nomination turns into a win this year.
Given the momentum behind her performance, and growing calls for greater inclusivity in Hollywood, this feels more than just a milestone. It could be a turning point — one that influences how future awards recognise diverse talent.
