History of Capitol Technology University
Capitol Technology University was founded in 1927 as the Capitol Radio Engineering Institute (CREI) by Eugene H. Rietzke in Washington D.C. to train radio and electronics technicians. It began as a correspondence school and later expanded to a residence division in 1932. As technology advanced, CREI added new training programs and courses. In the mid-1950s, it began awarding three-year Associate of Applied Science degrees and changed its name to Capitol Institute of Technology (CIT) in 1964. CIT awarded its first Bachelor of Science degrees in 1966 and relocated to Kensington, Maryland in 1969.
Capitol College, as it was renamed, offered more degrees in engineering and management, built on-campus housing, and converted from a quarterly academic calendar to a semester system. The college continued to expand in the 1990s, adding master's degrees and partnerships with NASA and the Maryland Distance Learning Network. In 2010, Capitol College launched its first-ever doctoral program in information assurance and added its second doctoral program in management and decision sciences four years later.
Capitol Technology University has continued to expand and offer academic programs in engineering, cybersecurity, computer science, business, and related fields. Today, it is the only independent university in Maryland that specializes in providing relevant education in these fields.
