The US Consulate General Chennai and the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) solidified their collaboration by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Friday, paving the way for the establishment of an American Corner on the CUSAT campus. US Consul General Christopher W. Hodges and CUSAT Registrar V. Meera officially endorsed the MoU in the presence of CUSAT Vice Chancellor P.G. Sankaran during a visit by a delegation of 18 US universities to CUSAT.

 

This landmark agreement marks the beginning of a new era of educational partnership between the United States and India, with the American Corner at CUSAT poised to become an integral part of a global network of over 600 American Spaces spanning India, Asia, and beyond. Operating under a flexible partnership model, the American Spaces program, administered by the US government, serves as a beacon of cultural exchange and academic collaboration worldwide.

 

The establishment of the American Corner at CUSAT heralds the resurgence of vibrant cultural exchange programs reminiscent of the American cultural center in Thiruvananthapuram, which closed its doors in 1970. With a focus on fostering closer ties between Kerala and the United States, the partnership aims to create a dynamic platform for collaboration between CUSAT and the Centre for Science in Society. Together, they seek to inspire and empower the next generation of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) enthusiasts, scientists, researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the collaboration, Consul General Hodges emphasized the transformative impact the American Corner will have on facilitating mutual understanding and supporting the remarkable initiatives undertaken by CUSAT. Leveraging the resources of the American Centre Chennai, the new American Corner will offer access to a wide range of academic and research materials through its eLibraryUSA platform. Additionally, it will provide English language and professional development programs, media literacy workshops, and advisory services for those interested in pursuing study opportunities in the United States.

 

Moreover, the American Corner partnership will serve as a catalyst for fostering student exchanges and research collaborations between CUSAT and American universities.
