Usher's Super Bowl Halftime Show Announcement Sparks Controversy: Irrelevant or Iconic?
Entertainment & Media
The news of Usher headlining the halftime show at Super Bowl LVIII has garnered a mixed response from fans. Some fans have playfully referred to him as 'Mr. Irrelevant,' a term usually reserved for the last pick in the NFL draft, due to his recent lack of new music. On Sunday, the NFL revealed that Usher, an eight-time Grammy Award winner, will be part of the lineup for the big game in Paradise, Las Vegas, in February. This marks the fifth collaboration between the NFL and Jay-Z's Roc Nation for the halftime show, even though Usher is not officially signed with the label. Rihanna headlined the previous year's show when it was sponsored by Apple Music.
Usher, known for his nine No. 1 hits and 18 top 10 hits on the Billboard music charts since 1997, has collaborated with some of the biggest stars in the music industry. This has led fans to speculate about potential guest appearances during the Super Bowl halftime show.
Reactions on social media have been divided. Some fans expressed excitement and nostalgia, while others had reservations. One user humorously commented on X (formerly known as Twitter), "Wow, it's really cool they're having Usher do the halftime show this year!!! I wonder who they're gonna choose for the 2007 Super Bowl!"
However, not all fans were enthusiastic. One NFL fan criticized the choice, stating, "This is a terrible act for the Superbowl. It's been years since they had a real group that's huge. I'll pass."
On the other hand, a Usher fan tweeted, "Honestly, Usher performing the Super Bowl Halftime show is going to be so iconic."
Some questioned the choice's relevancy, with one user asking, "They couldn't find anyone better or more relevant than Usher to do the Super Bowl halftime show?" Another user defended Usher's credentials, mentioning his successful Las Vegas residency.
According to TODAY, Usher has been residing in Las Vegas since 2022 but plans to relocate by the end of the year. A fan encouraged attending the Super Bowl, saying, "If you didn't get to attend Usher's residency, definitely try and make it to that Super Bowl because he really puts on a great show."
The announcement has sparked a spirited debate among fans, setting the stage for an intriguing halftime performance in February.
