Kamehameha Schools to Offer Tuition-Free Education for All Students

Major Change in Tuition Policy
Kamehameha Schools in Hawaii announced that it plans to stop charging tuition for all students, from preschool through 12th grade, beginning with the 2026-27 school year. This change still needs approval from the courts before it can take effect.
What This Means for Families
Until now, families paid tuition that ranged from about $3,000 per year for part-day preschool to more than $12,000 for boarding students, even though much of the cost was already subsidized by the school’s endowment. Under the new plan, tuition will be fully covered by the school’s endowment, eliminating these costs for families.
Kamehameha Schools cited its values and mission as the reason for the decision. The leadership said they want education to reflect connection and preparation rather than transactional payment.
Background of the School
Kamehameha Schools was founded by Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop’s will to educate Hawaiian children. It operates multiple preschools and campuses across the Hawaiian Islands and offers a curriculum tied to culture and heritage.
The school’s endowment is one of the largest in the country, supporting its operations and programs. Before this change, tuition fees still applied despite the size of the endowment.
Why the Change Is Significant
Making education fully tuition-free removes a major barrier that families face when considering enrollment. It also reflects the school’s tradition and mission tied to community values rather than fees.
Supporters of this shift say it could enable more students to access quality education without financial strain. The pending court approval is the last administrative hurdle before implementation.
Looking Ahead
If approved, the change takes effect in the 2026-27 school year. Families across the islands will be able to send their children to Kamehameha Schools without worrying about tuition costs. Staff said the school remains committed to high academic standards, cultural education, and preparing students for future success.
