Why Wärtsilä Is Walking Away From Its Energy Storage Business

Wärtsiläproceeded to split off its energy storage business due to its conclusion that the division would provide little synergy with the firm's overall activities as well as pose serious profitability issues. The step comes as a radical departure from the strategies of Wärtsilä, a leading technology firm in Finland, since the firm has long made investments into the energy storage sector.
Strategic Review Leads to New Direction
The organization had earlier gone through a very extensive strategic review of its Energy Storage and Optimization business line. Even though the initial result of the review was that Wärtsilä will keep on growing its energy storage and optimization business, later developments caused the organization to take an alternative route.
As per the new business model, Wärtsilä intends to create a joint venture with its energy storage business around the world together with RCT Solutions GmbH. After completion of the transaction, the energy storage business will cease to be a separate business segment for Wärtsilä.
Profitability Remains a Key Concern
Despite the importance of energy storage technology for the world’s energy transition, profitability was always hard to obtain. The company previously recognized the fact that its investments into entering new markets would affect its earnings in the short term.
However, the management faced difficulties in obtaining sustainable returns because the company had set quite high ambitions for its future development. Therefore, the energy storage unit would be more efficient operating under another owner’s supervision.
Impact on Reporting Structure
With the conclusion of the deal, expected in the third quarter of 2026, Wärtsilä will stop reporting financials separately for the energy storage business line. Projections for this unit will be discontinued as well. The company noted that the acquisition will not have an immediate effect on P&L performance.
Continuing Role in the Energy Transition
Nevertheless, even after the divestment, Wärtsilä still strongly believes that energy storage plays an important role in the transformation of the system into one powered by renewable energy sources. Nevertheless, the management felt that divesting would help both companies maximize their growth opportunities better.
