The Milwaukee U-Haul Building is a Cause for Concern

Fire Breaks Out Again in Walker’s Point
A U-Haul storage facility in Milwaukee's Walker's Point neighborhood experienced its second fire incident of 2026. The most recent fire incident took place on April 6 when a two-alarm fire started at the location near First Street and Lapham Boulevard.
Firefighters reached the scene within minutes after they received the emergency call at 9 p.m. The building emitted smoke which firefighters observed when they reached the emergency location.
Emergency Response and Fire Control
About 45 firefighters responded to the fire emergency. The fire began on the first floor and firefighters successfully extinguished it after one hour. The incident resulted in no reported injuries. The authorities confirmed that the fire remains undetermined and active investigations continue.
Link to Previous Major Fire
This facility has experienced two separate fires within the same year. The building suffered extensive damage from a five-alarm fire which occurred in January 2026. Firefighters fought the fire for more than 13 hours while facing extreme winter weather conditions.
The previous fire incident destroyed hundreds of storage units while causing major damage to the building structure. The incident resulted in no reported injuries despite its large scale.
Ongoing Concerns and Future Plans
The facility's owner requested permission to demolish sections of the damaged structure after the earlier fire incident. The officials have raised safety concerns because large storage facilities with intricate designs have experienced multiple incidents.
Fire officials have explained firefighting difficulties at these facilities because concealed areas enable rapid flame propagation. The two fires that happened within a brief timeframe are being investigated to establish any possible links between the two events. The authorities are working to establish measures that will stop similar incidents from happening again.
