Huawei is aiming to have its own autonomous cars on the roads by 2025 as competition to be among the early pioneers heats up.

Apple, Amazon, and Google, are among the many tech giants looking to launch self-driving cars. Chinese alternatives such as Baidu and Alibaba have also been testing autonomous vehicles including long-distance trucks and local delivery vans.

During an industry conference, Huawei announced that it too is entering the fray.

“Our team’s goal is to reach true driverless passenger cars in 2025,” said Wang Jun, a senior executive at Huawei’s smart vehicle unit.

Huawei has increasingly diversified its offerings following the tough sanctions placed on the company under Trump’s administration—sanctions that have so far been upheld by Biden’s team.

With the sanctions unlikely to be lifted in any meaningful capacity anytime soon, Huawei has been establishing many partnerships with automotive firms.

Over the past year, Huawei has partnered with the Guangzhou Automobile Group, Chongqing Changan Automobile Co., and the BAIC Group to name but a few.

Whether or not it deserved the sanctions is a matter of debate, but Huawei indisputably brings significant innovation and competition to every industry that it enters. We look forward to seeing what Huawei can do for the automotive industry.
